The update offers encouraging news for fans waiting for the sequel.
Destin Daniel Cretton gives the latest Shang-Chi 2 update
Destin Daniel Cretton has offered a promising update on the future of Shang-Chi 2, confirming that Marvel Studios has not put the sequel on hold. He revealed that development on the sequel is actively progressing even as he prepares to release Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
According to ScreenRant, Cretton confirmed the project’s status by stating, “We are in active development right now.” The filmmaker’s comments come ahead of the theatrical debut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026, marking another major Marvel project under his direction.
The latest comments build on an earlier update Cretton shared during an interview with Rolling Stone. At the time, he revealed that he had recently caught up with Dave Callaham, who wrote Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, to discuss the follow-up. “I also would love to see Shang-Chi 2!” Cretton said before adding, “I was talking to Dave Callaham, our writer, about it just a few weeks ago, so fingers crossed.” Though he stopped short of discussing a production timeline, his remarks indicate that discussions surrounding the sequel remain ongoing.
Cretton has previously admitted that superhero films had never been part of his career plans. In an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly, he recalled telling Kevin Feige during their first meeting that he had not been interested in directing a comic book movie. He ultimately signed on to Shang-Chi, a production that later navigated significant delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
