Peacemaker’s future hangs in the balance after the cliffhanger Season 2 finale. John Cena has now addressed his return, and his answer leaves more questions than answers.
John Cena on when Peacemaker could return after Salvation cliffhanger
It seems John Cena remained deliberately vague when asked about Christopher Smith’s next possible appearance. Speaking to ComicBook while promoting his new film Little Brother, the actor made it clear that the decision rests entirely with DC Studios co-head James Gunn.
Cena was asked directly about the two-year time gap between Peacemaker Season 2 and the upcoming movie Man of Tomorrow, and how that extended isolation might reshape his character. His response offered little comfort to fans craving concrete news.
“Oh my goodness. Anything I would give you would just be personal speculation and not on the bullseye of the actual DCU,” Cena said. “That is a James Gunn question, for sure. He has every idea between his ears, and I have full faith and trust in him. Whether we ever hear from Peacemaker again or not is not up to me.”
The star chose to focus on gratitude rather than timelines. “What I can control is my gratitude for working with James Gunn, for him making me a better performer, for more moments like Little Brother. And man, I hope I get the helmet pretty soon. I’d love to dance another time.”
The uncertainty is not unfounded. Gunn has previously confirmed that no Peacemaker Season 3 is currently in development, removing the most obvious platform for resolving the Salvation cliffhanger. Furthermore, the filmmaker stated last October that Man of Tomorrow will not reveal Christopher Smith’s fate.
The Peacemaker Season 2 finale exiled Christopher Smith to Salvation. Rick Flag Sr. captured him, ripped him away from Harcourt and his Checkmate team, and dumped him in a dimension with no exit.
The DCU calendar offers few clues. Man of Tomorrow and Supergirl hold the only film dates. Further, Lanterns and Creature Commandos Season 2 round out the television side. Cena’s return could depend on a yet unannounced project. Gunn insists every crossover must serve the story first rather than force connections, so it looks like Smith won’t resurface until a script genuinely needs him.
