DC’s new Lanterns TV show will feature Sinestro in live action after a long time, and a new reveal should make comic fans happy. The series will follow John Stewart and Hal Jordan investigating a mystery on Earth. While Stewart won’t be a Green Lantern at the start, Jordan has been confirmed to have a long history of being in the Green Lantern Corps.
What is the new Sinestro reveal for the Lanterns TV show?
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, it was confirmed that Jordan will have a comic-accurate history with Sinestro. The interview reveals that Sinestro was Jordan’s former mentor, who was kicked out of the Lantern Corps. after attempting a coup. Following that, the Corps. became concerned about Jordan’s history with Sinestro and planned to have him find his own replacement in the event of his own death.
“It was really interesting, because you’re getting into all kinds of different weeds of what goes on in their relationship in the past, a lot of which, for myself, is very personal,” said Chandler, speaking about his approach to playing an older Jordan. “I created little things for myself with him that created a relationship that was very intimate and intense.”
In the DC comics lore, Sinestro originally deceived the Guardians into believing his power ring selected him honorably. His tenure with the Corps came to an end when Jordan, serving under his command, exposed his tyrannical rule on his homeworld of Korugar. Banished to the antimatter universe of Qward, Sinestro forged his iconic yellow power ring and embraced full villainy.
Sinestro is being played by Ulrich Thomsen in the upcoming series. The show’s trailers have yet to fully show Thomsen suited up as the villain. In an early trailer, one moment shows Jordan visiting Sinestro in an alien prison, which tracks from their history in the comics. The villain was previously played by Mark Strong in the 2011 Green Lantern film.
The series will debut with 8 episodes, with a second season also being in the works.
Lanterns will premiere on August 16, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
