Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest addressed lingering questions about Josh Gad’s mysterious disappearance and hinted at possible developments for Season 2. The series co-creator revealed what happened to Gad’s character and shared how those events could shape future episodes.
Andrew Guest on if Josh Gad could return in Wonder Man Season 2
Josh Gad’s fate in Wonder Man Season 1 remains unresolved, as he disappears after attempting to pass through Door Man in Episode 4.
Showrunner Andrew Guest confirms to Dexerto, “Josh Gad is alive and inside Door Man currently,” and adds, “If we get a Season 2, my promise is to get Josh Gad out of Door Man, and back into the world.” Guest also suggests a possible future arc, saying, “It has occurred to me that maybe Josh Gad would have Door Man powers, after having been inside him for so long. Maybe Josh Gad becomes the new Door Man!”
The writers specifically created Gad’s character for him after he agreed to appear. “There was always a celebrity character cameo for DeMarr to be paired with in that episode, but Josh was the first person we asked,” said Guest in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly. The standalone fourth episode focuses on DeMarr Davis, a club bouncer turned superpowered figure called Door Man. Gad plays an exaggerated version of himself, and DeMarr rises in fame after saving people from a fire.
The episode explores the origin of the “Doorman Clause,” an in-universe insurance policy. It bans superpowered individuals from acting after Gad’s mysterious disappearance. Co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton says Gad’s character “planted this seed of power” in DeMarr, which led to tragic consequences. In one scene, Gad performs a club remix of “In Summer” from Frozen. Cretton described the EDM version as a “banger.”
The character arc functions as a cautionary tale. It shows the dangers of fame for powered individuals. Andrew Guest says the Marvel mutant Doorman inspired the story. The writers designed it to reflect Simon Williams’ desire for a career on his own terms.
Guest also teased what could lie ahead in a potential Season 2. Speaking to The Direct, he explained that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II questioned during filming whether Simon Williams could continue acting now that the Department of Damage Control (DODC) is aware of his powers.
Guest responded, “Yeah, so the DODC knows it. But maybe they don’t want to let everyone else know it. Maybe there’s a deal to be worked out between Simon and the DODC, where there’s a little trade-off going on.” He added that given the opportunity, they could “square this circle.” Guest also confirmed, “We’ll also get Josh Gad free. He’s gonna come out Doorman in a Season 2, I promise.”
