Tom Holland has explained why adapting Spider-Man’s iconic Symbiote suit for the MCU may be more difficult than fans expect. The storyline involving Spider-Man and the symbiote gives birth to Venom in the Marvel comics. The only live-action Spider-Man film to adapt that story has been Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
Holland believes translating the black suit to the MCU is a unique challenge, largely because of Insomniac Games’ critically acclaimed Spider-Man series on PlayStation.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz while promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland touched on the potential idea of bringing the black suit to life in the future. The actor started by praising the black suit that Tobey Maguire wore in Spider-Man 3.
“I think if we ever got to black suit in Spider-Man, I don’t know how we would tackle that challenge because they did it so well in the game, right?” said Holland. “And I don’t know how you make a suit that’s similar to the one in the game without having a CG component, right? I don’t know how you do that.”
The Symbiote suit remains one of Spider-Man’s most anticipated MCU upgrades
Following 2007’s Spider-Man 3 and other animated stories, the most recent exploration of the symbiote suit came in Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2. In the video game, the symbiote attaches itself to Harry before latching on to Peter Parker.
The new suit gives Parker much stronger abilities at the cost of making him feel more isolated and violent. In the game’s final act, Peter gets rid of the symbiote, which then goes back to Harry, turning him into Venom.
While Spider-Man 3 relied heavily on a practical fabric design, the video game iteration was more alien in nature. In the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, a small part of the symbiote was accidentally left in the MCU by Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock. However, in Venom: The Last Dance, the scene was retconned to have the symbiote stay in Eddie Brock’s universe.
Fans have long hoped that Holland’s Spider-Man would wear the black suit. In the Marvel comics, Peter gets the suit on his adventures during the events of Secret Wars. It remains to be seen if Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures will do the same in 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Holland maintains that he has not been told any details about the upcoming film.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will deal with Parker’s isolation in a new way when it releases on July 31, 2026.
