Keira Knightley Reacts to J.K. Rowling Controversy After Joining Harry Potter Audiobooks Cast

Keira Knightley’s latest role in the Harry Potter universe has sparked new attention following her comments about not being aware of the ongoing boycott against J.K. Rowling. The development centers on her participation in Audible’s upcoming audiobook series. It also follows her response to the controversy surrounding the author’s views on transgender rights.

Keira Knightley wasn’t ‘aware’ of J.K. Rowling’s controversy before Harry Potter Audiobooks casting

Keira Knightley said she was unaware of the ongoing boycott against J.K. Rowling’s work before joining Audible’s new Harry Potter audiobook series.

The 40-year-old actor told Decider, “I was not aware of that, no. I’m very sorry,” when asked about criticism directed at Rowling’s views on transgender rights. Knightley added, “I think we’re all living in a period of time right now where we’re all going to have to figure out how to live together… I hope that we can all find respect.”

Rowling’s controversy began in 2020 when she published a 3,800-word essay claiming the transgender “movement” causes “demonstrable harm” to cisgender women. Her statements led to widespread backlash, with Harry Potter stars including Daniel Radcliffe publicly disagreeing. Radcliffe said, “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people.” Rowling later reaffirmed her stance in 2023, writing on X that she would “happily do two years [in prison] if the alternative is compelled speech.” (via Entertainment Weekly)

Knightley voices Professor Dolores Umbridge in Audible’s upcoming seven-part adaptation of Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The project, announced in August, features Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed as Lord Voldemort, and Matthew Macfadyen as Professor Snape. Cush Jumbo narrates the series, with additional performances from Kit Harington, James McAvoy, and Frankie Treadway.

The audiobook launch coincides with HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation, which has begun casting and production planning. The renewed attention on Rowling’s work has reignited debate over separating her creative legacy from her political statements, as major stars and new collaborators continue to address questions surrounding their involvement in the franchise.
