In the build-up to Andor Season 2, showrunner Tony Gilroy has expressed his desire for Star Wars to explore previously untapped genres, such as horror and sitcom. Taking place before the events of A New Hope, the series originally made its small-screen debut in September 2022 and showcased the story of Andor, a thief who decides to leave his life of crime behind to join the Rebellion.
Despite its unconventional setting, the show unexpectedly opened to great reviews from both critics and audiences alike. With Andor Season 2 now on the horizon, Gilroy has highlighted how the series’ success might open new doors for the iconic science-fiction franchise.
Tony Gilroy hopes Andor Season 2 could lead to a Star Wars sitcom or horror movie
In a recent discussion, Tony Gilroy stated that he expects Andor’s positive reception to enable Star Wars to explore other areas of storytelling, precisely through a sitcom or a horror movie.
While speaking with SFX magazine, the Andor Season 2 creator noted, “I think we’ve made our lane with Andor, and Skeleton Crew was trying to do their own, too. The hope is that you can do anything, and we’re going to open up some canonical things and concepts in Andor that maybe will get people excited to do other things,” as per GamesRadar+.
Gilroy then doubled down on his aspiration to see Star Wars move into genres that the franchise has yet to touch upon, saying, “I always fantasized that the show would break new ground, that someone would be able to make a three-camera sitcom in Star Wars or a horror movie. I think the first thing I said to Kathy [Kennedy, Lucasfilm president] when she said they wanted to open a line was, ‘Could you do a courtroom drama?’ And why not? We’ve worked really hard on Andor to make our lane, and it’s up to other people now to find another way to do it.”
Despite Gilroy’s optimism, Disney has yet to share any plans about any Star Wars project that steers away from the franchise’s traditional setting. In the meantime, however, fans can feast their eyes upon Andor Season 2, which premieres on Disney+ on April 22.
