A new Avengers movie update has surfaced online, teasing the potential appearance of one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s iconic villains. Later this year, on December 18, Marvel Studios will be releasing the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday movie. It will then be followed by the theatrical release of Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
What MCU villain is potentially returning in an upcoming Avengers movie?
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Josh Brolin’s Thanos will reportedly return in Avengers: Secret Wars. However, it’s unclear if Thanos would have a big role or if it’s just a cameo appearance. The fan-favorite villain was last seen at the end of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, where the team successfully defeated him and his minions thanks to Iron Man’s sacrifice. Different variants of the characters were also previously seen in the Disney+ animated shows What If…? and Marvel Zombies.
A previous report suggested that Marvel Studios was reportedly planning to start production on Avengers: Secret Wars sometime in April 2026 under the working title, Apple Pie 2. Just like Doomsday’s shooting schedule, filming might last until September 2026.
So far, the only confirmed cast members for Secret Wars are The Fantastic Four: First Steps stars Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing. Academy Award winner Robert Downey Jr. is also expected to appear as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. According to a previous listing, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man is reportedly one of the movie’s main cast members. Besides Holland, his Spider-Man: Brand New Day co-star, Sadie Sink, is also being rumored to have joined the Secret Wars cast. Rumors about her character continue to circulate, with many fans speculating that she might be playing Jean Grey.
