DCU’s Supergirl Is ‘Kind of a Mess,’ James Gunn Teases New Movie

James Gunn recently opened up about the upcoming Supergirl movie, and revealed the character is kind of a mess compared to her Superman counterpart.

What did James Gunn say about Supergirl?

Speaking to Comic Book, Gunn opened up about the main differences between Superman and Kara Zor-El, mainly in their upbringing and how it’s affected them.

“I think those things are really integral to the two characters and the differences between them, and that Clark really does have sort of this really happy childhood,” Gunn said of potentially seeing flashbacks of Krypton in Supergirl. “I mean, he had parents who loved him in an easy going upbringing, and it makes him the least dysfunctional of superheroes in so many ways. And Supergirl, especially the DCU Supergirl, she’s kind of a mess. I mean, she’s, she’s had a real issues growing up. And it is based on the comic where she watched person after person after person dying in front of her as her piece of the planet disintegrated.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is said to be based on Tom King’s 2021-2022 comic book series, which Bilquis Evely illustrated. The film stars Milly Alcock, who will play the titular role of Kara Zor-El, and will be written by Ana Nogueira and produced by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” said Gunn of the project in 2023. “She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on Tom King’s 2021-2022 comic book series, which was illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie, with a release date currently set for June 26, 2026.
