Borat’s Maria Bakalova Joins Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Now that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is wrapped, its secrets get harder to keep. As revealed today by Deadline, one of them has been Maria Bakalova. The Bulgarian actress made a major breakout playing the daughter of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. In footage with unsuspecting members of the public, she matched Cohen’s gift for improvisation and staying in character even in the most awkward of circumstances. During the movie’s most infamous scene, she fended off the advances of former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, until Cohen entered in character and interrupted their conversation.
Her role in Guardians remains unknown at this time. But the revelation of it comes rapidly on the heels of Daniela Melchior’s casting also. Neither one is reportedly the “unannounced actor” James Gunn said he couldn’t show in the wrap pictures.
The final (as of the moment) installment in James Gunn’s comedic space opera trilogy will hit theaters May 5, 2023. It’s not necessarily the last we’ll see of the Guardians, but Marvel may need to bust out new contracts if they want more afterward.
What do you think of Bakalova’s casting? Let us know in comments.
