Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

James Gunn Announces the First (Real) Day of Filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Last month, Chris Pratt posted a video on Twitter announcing that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had started production. However, his announcement may have been premature, because James Gunn quickly swooped in to clarify that the actual shoot was still weeks away and that Pratt was only on set for rehearsals and camera tests. But now, it sounds like the cast and crew are finally ready for takeoff. Gunn has posted his own photo on Instagram confirming today is the first day of filming on the highly-anticipated sequel.

Gunn’s new behind-the-scenes photo features all of the series’ principal cast members. Pratt (Peter Quill), Dave Bautista (Drax), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Sean Gunn (Kraglin/Rocket), Zoe Saldaña (Gamora), and Karen Gillan (Nebula) are all present and accounted for. They are also joined by franchise newcomer Will Poulter, who was cast as Adam Warlock last month. Finally, Chukwudi Iwuji appears in the photo as well. Iwuji will next appear as Clemson Murn in Gunn’s upcoming Peacemaker series on HBO Max. And it looks like Gunn enjoyed working with him so much that he gave him a role in Guardians 3. Suffice it to say, Marvel’s Guardians family has a long few months ahead of them. In addition to filming Vol. 3, they’re also working on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will premiere on Disney+ in late 2022 and set up the team’s next big-screen adventure. Gunn previously teased that the new special will also introduce “one of the greatest MCU characters of all time.” Some of the films’ cast members also recently began filming scenes for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, a new indoor roller coaster coming to Walt Disney World’s EPCOT resort.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
