James Wan Teases a More ‘Mature’ Story in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has only been in production for a few months. Regardless, this didn’t stop the cast and crew from offering an early look at the highly-anticipated sequel during today’s DC FanDome event. The livestream delivered a brand new sizzle reel that showed James Wan, Jason Momoa, and others dropping hints about what we can expect from Arthur Curry’s next big-screen outing. You can check it out for yourself below.

The filmmakers couldn’t reveal any finished scenes from the movie just yet. Instead, fans will have to settle for a mix of behind-the-scenes footage along with some new concept art. Producer Peter Safran noted that Wan and his cohorts have turned the dials up to 11” on the next installment. And judging by the illustrations shown, it’s not hard to see why. Most of artwork highlights some of the new creatures and worlds that will be introduced in the sequel, from giant jellyfish to new island and desert locations, and beyond.

The new reel also showcased some of the movie’s other returning cast members, including Patrick Wilson’s Orm, Amber Heard’s Mera, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta, who still blames Arthur for his father’s death. Momoa also promised that the sequel will expand on some of the environmental themes that were touched on in the original Aquaman. According to Wan, these are important to the film’s overall tone.

“People are going to be in for a treat when Aquaman 2 comes out,” said Wan. “They’re going to get a movie that’s more mature, but yet still retains its fun. [It will] give the audience something different, something new that they haven’t seen before.”

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 16, 2022.
