A DC sequel is finding a second wave of viewers after climbing Prime Video’s movie rankings. Despite mixed reviews in theaters, the film continues to attract streaming audiences worldwide.
More than two years after its theatrical release, the superhero adventure is proving it still has an audience. The movie has remained among the most-watched titles on Prime Video, giving the final chapter of the DC Extended Universe a fresh boost.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom continues to be a streaming success on Prime Video
While its box-office run sparked plenty of debate, the film’s streaming performance tells a different story. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been holding a place in Prime Video’s Top 10 movies, showing that viewers are still interested in returning to Atlantis (via Flix Patrol). The movie serves as the sequel to 2018’s billion-dollar hit Aquaman and marks the final DCEU film before DC Studios’ reboot plans moved forward.
Directed by James Wan, the film follows Arthur Curry as he faces a renewed threat from Black Manta. After failing to defeat Aquaman previously, Black Manta gains the power of the Black Trident. To stop him, Aquaman breaks his half-brother Orm out of a prison to save both Atlantis and the world.
The cast includes Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park and Temuera Morrison. James Wan returned to direct, while Peter Safran, Wan and Rob Cowan served as producers. The movie was released by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Critics were largely unimpressed, but audiences responded more positively. The sequel currently holds a 33% Tomatometer score and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. On IMDb, it carries a 5.6/10 rating. Many fans loved the underwater scenes, large-scale action sequences, and the chemistry between Momoa and Wilson, even if critics felt the story played things safe.
Financially, the sequel earned about $440 million worldwide against a reported production budget of roughly $205 million. Although it fell short of the original film’s massive success, it became one of DC’s stronger performers.
