Watch the First Seven Minutes of the Mortal Kombat Reboot

In the original Mortal Kombat movie, the video game series’ eternal adversaries, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, were barely an afterthought. However, that’s going to change in the Mortal Kombat reboot. The upcoming film will explore the genesis of their feud in a lengthy opening sequence.

HBO Max and New Line Cinema have released the first seven minutes of Mortal Kombat, which turn the clock back to the 17th century. Hanzo Hasashi (Hiroyuki Sanada) happily lives in peace before he and his family are attacked by Bi-Han (Joe Taslim). This is one battle Hanzo can’t win, but it also proves to be the crucible that will transform him into Scorpion.

Although Scorpion and Sub-Zero will have larger roles in this incarnation, the new main character is Cole Young (Lewis Tan). For reasons he can’t understand, Cole will be drawn into the Mortal Kombat tournament and help determine the fate of Earth and Outworld.

Jessica McNamee also co-stars as Sonya Blade, with Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, and Chin Han as Shang Tsung.

The Mortal Kombat reboot will hit HBO Max and theaters on April 23.
