James Gunn Confirms Suicide Squad Creator’s Cameo in The Suicide Squad

Following the Empire Magazine cover story on The Suicide Squad, a sharp-eyed fan recognized a comic book creator in the film. John Ostrander, the creator of the modern Suicide Squad, appears in costume next to Michael Rooker’s Savant in one of the pictures. When the image was brought to the attention of Gunn, he quickly confirmed Ostrander’s cameo. He also revealed that the name of Ostrander’s character is Dr. Fitzgibbon.

It was Ostrander who came up with the idea of teaming up DC’s C-list villains in 1986 during the Legends miniseries. Ostrander also wrote the subsequent Suicide Squad ongoing series, and created Amanda Waller, among others. According to executive producer Peter Safran, The Suicide Squad also use one of Ostrander’s plotlines in the movie.

“There they have to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim, where political prisoners were held and experimentations took place,” said Safran. The location of the prison is in the fictional country, Corto Maltese.
