Joker Earns the Most British Academy Award Nominations for 2020

What a time to be alive for comic book movie fans. Not only did  Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame became the highest box-office success ever in 2019, but DC’s Joker also drew the highest-grosses for an R-rated film ever. It seems that awards voters loved Todd Phillips’ movie as well, since Arthur Fleck’s story won two of the four Golden Globes awards it was nominated for. And with a total of 11 nominations, Joker is also leading the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Awards) nominations including the one for Best Film. Todd Phillips’ movie landed one more nomination than either Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood or The Irishman, which earned 10 nominations each.

Joker will have to face some tough competition — like 1917The Irishman, Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, and Parasite — if it wants to bring home the prestigious BAFTA Best Film award.

Unsurprisingly, Joker star Joaquin Phoenix got a nomination for the Leading Actor Award thanks to his outstanding interpretation of Arthur Fleck. Phoenix recently picked up a Golden Globe and seems to be a strong contender for the British Academy award. The actor will lock horns with Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Taron Egerton (Rocketman), and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes).

Todd Phillips will get the chance to bounce back after his stinging loss at the Golden Globes. He will run against Sam Mendes, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Bong Joon-Ho for the Director award.

Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will try to get their share of glory too. Marvel Studios’ blockbuster landed a nomination for Best Special Visual Effects. The last installment in the Skywalker saga, on the other hand, got three nominations including the one for Original Score. Check out the BAFTA Awards 2020 nominations full list to see every contender.

It’s important to note that the Oscar nominees will be announced on Monday. Who knows what surprises they may have in hold for Joker?
