Avengers: Endgame Directors Reveal Why Black Panther Returned First

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame!

This Tuesday, August 13, Avengers: Endgame is hitting Blu-ray and DVD following its digital launch last month. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been promoting the release by answering several fan questions. Now, the Russos have addressed why Black Panther, Shuri, and Okoye were the first three heroes to emerge in the pivotal “portals” scene.

Via CBR, the Russos’ response was shared on an Endgame Reddit thread.

“We spent a lot of time in the edit room playing around with the sequencing of the portals,” said Joe Russo. “We always wanted Sam [Wilson] to be the first one to communicate with Cap via his comm and Sam was last in Wakanda, so logically the first portal that would open would the Wakandan portal. And the first person that would logically walk through a portal from Wakanda would be the king himself, bringing his army once again to the defense of Cap and the world.”

While Shuri doesn’t have a line of dialogue in the movie, Black Panther/T’Challa did take the spotlight during the final battle. T’Challa and other heroes helped keep Tony Stark’s Infinity Gauntlet away from Thanos as long as possible. Beyond that, T’Challa and Shuri were reunited with their mother in Wakanda, before joining Okoye and the other heroes at Stark’s funeral.

Black Panther 2 was noticeably absent from Marvel’s Phase 4 announcements at Comic-Con. However, Ryan Coogler is working on the sequel for Marvel and it will likely hit in 2022 or 2023.
