Ahead of Avengers: Endgame Encore returning to theaters, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have shared why they believe the film is worth experiencing on the big screen again. Speaking during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the filmmakers said the re-release offers more than a chance to rewatch the blockbuster. They pointed to the theatrical audience experience and newly added footage.
The Russos on why we need to see Avengers: Endgame Encore in theaters
Anthony and Joe Russo have explained why fans should return to theaters for Avengers: Endgame Encore. Speaking during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the directors said the theatrical release serves two specific purposes.
The filmmakers shared the comments while speaking with Extra after Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation. During the interview, they were asked why audiences should rewatch Endgame Encore in theaters. The Russos said the first reason is the atmosphere that only a theatrical screening can provide.
“I think it’s really important. I mean one if you want to have that you want to relive the experience of seeing it with a crowd with a live audience with everybody cheering and clapping and and rooting for all their favorite moments. That’s one reason,” Joe Russo said.
They also confirmed that Marvel has added a brand-new clip to the re-release. Explaining the second reason for the encore release, Joe Russo said, “The second reason is that there’s a very strong connection between Endgame and Doomsday. And if you see the movie in theaters, you’re going to see some new footage that uh that that illustrates that connection for you.”
Avengers: Endgame Encore returns to theaters on September 25, allowing audiences to re-watch the climactic battle against Thanos. The re-release arrives ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to open on December 18, 2026. The Russo brothers will also direct Avengers: Secret Wars, currently slated for release on December 17, 2027.
