Jill Soloway Replaces Bryan Singer as Director of Red Sonja

Earlier this year, X-Men director Bryan Singer was still on track to get $10 million for helming a new Red Sonja film. However, the revived sexual misconduct allegations against Singer eventually forced Millennium Films to shelve the project. Now, Red Sonja’s film has new life, according to a report from Deadline. Transparent creator Jill Soloway has been hired to write and direct Red Sonja.

“I can’t wait to bring Red Sonja’s epic world to life,” said Soloway. “Exploring this powerful mythology and evolving what it means to be a heroine is an artistic dream come true.”

Deadline notes that Soloway has “a bold new take” on Red Sonja. It also notes that Soloway “gives the film much better optics that already has studios approaching Millennium.”

Red Sonja is loosely based upon Red Sonya, a character created by Robert E. Howard. In the ’70s, Marvel re-envisioned Red Sonja as a contemporary of Howard’s Conan the Barbarian. Red Sonja went on to headline her own comic series at Marvel, and she is currently one of the main heroines of Dynamite Entertainment.

Millennium will begin casting for Red Sonja‘s title role, now that a new director is in place. Brigitte Nielsen starred in the first Red Sonja movie alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1985. A Red Sonja remake has been in development hell for years. Robert Rodriguez was once lined up to direct, with Rose McGowan attached as Red Sonja. However, that project ultimately fell apart.

What do you think about Jill Soloway as the new director of Red Sonja? Who would you cast in the lead? And what do you want to see in the film? Let us know in the comment section below!
