The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians jumps straight into one of the story’s biggest betrayals. Right in the premiere, Luke Castellan is shown poisoning Thalia’s Tree, instantly weakening Camp Half-Blood’s magical shield. Viewers already suspected Luke’s darker turn after Season 1, but the show reveals it earlier than Rick Riordan does in The Sea of Monsters.

Percy Jackson books reveal why Luke poisoned Thalia’s Tree in Season 2
In both The Sea of Monsters book and the Disney+ series, Luke poisoning Thalia’s Tree is a big deal. That’s because of his history with Thalia and Annabeth. Before Thalia became a tree, the trio spent years surviving together, and she even gave her life to protect them. Zeus then turned her into a tree, creating the magical shield that keeps Camp Half-Blood safe.
So weakening the tree cracks open the camp’s defenses, letting monsters slip through, like the Stymphalian birds that attack in Episode 2. On the surface, it looks like he’s simply trying to help Kronos rise by leaving the camp exposed. However, those who’ve read the book know that Kronos needs to be rebuilt after Zeus destroyed him, and Luke knows the Golden Fleece can help do it.
The Golden Fleece can fix pretty much anything, even what’s left of Kronos, and that’s exactly why Luke wants it. His big play isn’t just wrecking Camp Half-Blood’s defenses. He’s trying to force the camp into greenlighting a quest for the Fleece. He knows the demigods will chase it down to save Thalia’s Tree, and once they do all the heavy lifting, he will hand it over to Kronos.
Season 2 also levels up Luke’s backstory by shining a light on his bond with Thalia. Charlie Bushnell and Tamara Smart have teased that the show leans into their bond, drawing from The Diary of Luke Castellan, which digs into the trio’s early days.
