Gina Carano‘s firing from The Mandalorian triggered a lawsuit in 2024, and years later, she and Disney have finally reached a settlement. But why did Disney fire her, and how did the situation escalate into a high-profile lawsuit backed by Elon Musk? Here’s an explainer.
Why Gina Carano was fired by Disney
In 2021, Gina Carano was fired from her role as Cara Dune on The Mandalorian after sharing multiple controversial posts on social media.
One now-deleted post drew intense backlash after Carano compared being a Republican in today’s America to being Jewish during the Holocaust. The comparison sparked criticism from both fans and industry insiders.
In 2024, Carano filed a lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm in California federal court, accusing them of wrongfully terminating her and discriminating against her political views. She alleged that they violated her rights and demanded to be recast in the series, along with at least $75,000 in damages. Elon Musk covered her legal fees, keeping his 2023 promise to support users fired for posts on X.
Disney responded by filing a motion to dismiss the case. The company argued that it had a First Amendment right to decide who represents its artistic vision, stating it had “a constitutional right not to associate its artistic expression with Carano’s speech.”
Carano didn’t hold back. On X, she wrote:
“Disney has confirmed what has been known all along. They will fire you if you say anything they disagree with. Even if they have to MISREPRESENT, MALIGN, and MISCHARACTERIZE you to do it. If you ever wanted to know what today’s ‘Disney values’ are, they just told you.”
This week, both parties settled. Lucasfilm released a new statement to Variety:
“The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit… With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”
For now, it’s unclear if Gina Carano will return to The Mandalorian or any future Lucasfilm project.
