Projects Still in Development Limbo

  • The Taika Waititi Star Wars Movie: The film was announced on May 4, 2020, but has been in development for years. In her retirement interview this year, Former Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy described the film as “somewhat still alive.” However, she mentioned that her fate lies in the hands of her successors, Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan.
  • The Donald Glover Lando Movie: It was annouced in December 2020 as a series, but it was eventually decided to be a film. Glover was supposed to reprise his role from Solo: A Star Wars Story. Kennedy also clubbed this film with Waititi’s as “somewhat still alive.”
  • The Simon Kinberg Trilogy: Simon Kinberg was slated to develop a new Star Wars trilogy, but the film’s fate is hanging in the balance as well. On being asked about the film, Kennedy replied in January that Kinberg is “working right now.” She continued, “He wrote something that we read in August, and it was very good, but not there.”
  • The Carlton and Nick Cuse Live-Action Series: The first new live-action Star Wars series has yet to receive an update.
  • A Droid Story: First announced in December 2020, the project’s development remains unclear.
  • BONUS: Rangers of the New Republic: The Mandalorian spinoff faced trouble after Gina Carano was fired from Lucasfilm. While the matter was settled between Carano and Disney, the project hasn’t received any updates.
