Why Fans Think Pedro Pascal Will Return in The Last of Us Season 3

The Last of Us season 3 might see Pedro Pascal return as Joel for more flashback scenes. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann recently teased exploring previously unseen adventures between Joel and his brother Tommy, expanding the backstory that fans haven’t witnessed in the first two seasons.

While Pascal’s character met his tragic fate in the HBO show’s second season, the flashbacks would be the perfect narrative opportunity to delve deeper into the brothers’ shared history during the early days of the outbreak. For fans, the return of Pascal would also bring a nostalgic connection, as Joel remains a crucial element of The Last of Us universe.

Will Pedro Pascal return in The Last of Us Season 3?

Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have hinted at the possibility of Pedro Pascal reprising his role as Joel in The Last of Us season 3 through flashback sequences. While discussing the upcoming season’s storyline with The Hollywood Reporter, Mazin gushed, “Next season, we probably will have a lot more flexibility (to tell side stories). Maybe a side trip to do Joel and Tommy terrorizing the countryside, we’ll never know.”

The Primetime Emmy-winning producer added, “(Tommy’s) been in war, and we also know that for some time, he and Joel were doing some pretty bad things. So there is the potential of seeing this other side of Tommy, and that is now about him delivering on his understood promise to his brother.”

Druckmann offered another exciting note regarding Season 3, teasing that “there’s an epic nature to everything that’s about to happen.” He explained, “But this other story is going to be really important coming backing to Joel and Ellie and everything we’ve seen so far.”

From what viewers know so far, a major part of The Last of Us Season 3 will feature Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) perspective. However, the showmakers divulged that Abby’s story will eventually connect with the main plotline of Joel, Ellie, and everyone else.

Mazin noted, “Abby is the hero of her story. Wherever we go next, we’ll always be centering on somebody, whether it’s Ellie and Dina, or Abby and Owen … [But] everything is under the cloud or sunlight of Joel — what Joel did to Abby and what Abby did to Joel.”
