Did Vel Know About Cassian & Bix’s Baby in Andor? Finale Ending Explained

Many Andor fans are wondering if Vel Sartha knew about Cassian and Bix’s baby in the series finale. A popular fan theory says that the veteran resistance leader had learned about Bix’s child and actively kept it a secret from Cassian. If true, this would put a conversation that Vel has with Cassian in the Season 2 finale immediately into context. It would also make the entire ending even more heartbreaking and emotionally charged than it already is. Let’s analyze whether Vel had knowledge about Cassian’s child at the end of Andor.

Does Vel Sartha know about Cassian’s child with Bix?

While there’s no clear-cut evidence that Vel Sartha knew about Cassian’s baby with Bix in the Andor series finale, her last conversation with him somewhat suggests that she does (at least in our opinion).

In the final episode of Andor, as Kleya stumbles her way toward Cassian’s home at the Yavin rebel base, Vel is about to leave him after he tells her about the unauthorized operation he had on Coruscant. She’s there because Mon Mothma asked her to learn more about the validity of Kleya and Cassian’s new information about the Empire superweapon (which they don’t yet know is called The Death Star). From what showrunner Tony Gilroy has said, Cassian indeed does not know about his kid and Bix likely left his side because she was pregnant.

Vel tells Cassian that he should reconnect with Bix, who left a year earlier so that he would stay on course with the rebels. After many months to think about why Bix left, he has accepted her leaving for her safety and admits that Bix wouldn’t have been safe with him anyway. The more important reason, though, is that Bix understood that Cassian can’t settle down with her if that would jeopardize the Rebel Alliance from winning against the Empire and that he can’t leave prematurely, even if she wants him by her side.

Cassian then says it’s already “too late” to reconnect, but Vel interestingly replies that “she might disagree.” This is a curious response, because she would understand why Bix left and might not come to the conclusion that Bix would disagree unless she knew about the baby. Earlier in the season, Val explicitly talked with Bix about Cassian being “a leader” in the resistance and was frustrated that he accepted a mission from Luthen out of the blue. She knows how important he is to the cause, so it wouldn’t make that much sense for her to urge Cassian to reconnect with Bix and potentially pull him away from the resistance, especially now. That is, unless she knew something else about the situation, like the child Bix is keeping from him.

Cassian says he might talk with Bix once his stint in the Rebel Alliance is over, but Vel tells him, “Don’t wait too long.” That’s another interesting response. She knows the price that comes from waiting too long, having lost Cinta soon after they rekindled their relationship in Ghorman. The theory goes that Vel wants to keep Bix’s secret that she has a child, but she also wants to push Cassian into reconnecting with her sooner rather than later and perhaps thereby learn about the baby too.

Knowing what Vel tells Mon Mothma after verifying his information (this is why Mothma joins Draven in convincing Bail to lift Cassian’s punishment for breaking protocol), she would understand that the rebel missions going forward would only become more dangerous upon being convinced that the superweapon is real. Unfortunately, given the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it looks like Cassian never learns about his child, though we know his sacrifice does ultimately make it safer for Bix and the baby in the future.
