Disney World’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Will Open In 2022

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Will Open In 2022

It’s been nearly five years since Walt Disney World Resorts began building Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. However, the ambitious EPCOT attraction will not arrive this year as originally planned. Via the Disney Parks Blog, Cosmic Rewind won’t open until 2022.

Just as he did for Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout!, director James Gunn will reunite with the cast to film new scenes for Cosmic Rewind. Presumably that footage will be produced during the combined shoot of  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Unlike Mission Breakout!, Cosmic Rewind is Disney’s first reverse launch roller coaster, and also “one of the longest enclosed coasters in the world.” The Disney Parks Blog also states that “it’s a storycoaster that rotates 360 degrees so you’re always focused on all the action as you help the Guardians save the galaxy.”

As noted by Collider, Cosmic Rewind is a time travel adventure that connects the Guardians of the present with Peter Quill/Star-Lord’s trip to EPCOT when he was a child. Additionally, the surrounding area of the ride will be in “the Wonders of Xandar pavilion.” Essentially, it’s an EPCOT style cultural exchange “where the Xandarians show us their world, their people and their advanced technologies.”

Beyond that, Disney’s Imagineers are promising that the ride “will match the scale and adventure of the Guardians of the Galaxy films.”
