Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum created the world of Twilight City with artist Scott Hepburn in 2022. Later miniseries by other comic creators, such as Barfly and and The Alternates, expanded the setting. Now, the original creative team is reuniting for a third volume; Minor Threats: The Last Devil Left Alive.
Twilight City, as envisioned by Oswalt and Blum, is a twisted take on Marvel‘s New York City. There are hundreds of superheroes and supervillains, and some areas of the city left unlivable by their shenanigans. The various Minor Threats miniseries have explored the unseen issues of life in a world where superpowers are a reality. These issues have ranged from the superhero equivalent of stage moms, to the problems of a convicted supervillain finding work after serving their sentence. While not the first comic to explore such ideas, Minor Threats employs a unique blend of horror and humor that makes it memorable.
What is Minor Threats: The Last Devil Left Alive about?
The latest chapter, Minor Threats: The Last Devil Left Alive, centers around Frankie “Playtime” Follis. A supervillain with the power to turn any toy into a weapon, Frankie had formed a powerful criminal empire. Unfortunately, the whole thing came tumbling down thanks to the manipulations of Scalpel, Frankie’s lover and partner-in-crime. This pushed Frankie to go off the grid in the previous volume of Minor Threats.
The Last Devil Left Alive opens three years later, as Playtime returns to town. However, she’s not out for revenge. Indeed, she approaches former friend and foe alike, asking for help in uncovering a secret that threatens everyone in Twilight City.
“This series feels like the culmination of everything we’ve been building since the first Minor Threats, as well as all subsequent sequels and spin-offs,” noted Blum. “Frankie has had a rise and fall in the super-crime underworld of Twilight City but her luck may have finally run out. Somehow this is the biggest story we’ve ever told while also being a back-to-basics. It’s Frankie underground, assembling a group of new and old c-list villains to pull off an impossible mission.
