Ultimate Wolverine Reveals Fate of X-Men Professor X, Magneto, and Jean Grey

When the new Ultimate Universe premiered, one of the major mysteries was what happened to the classic X-Men. The current Ultimate X-Men series centers around young Mutants in Japan, with no sign of such mainstays as Professor X or Magneto. Their fate has finally been revealed, along with that of Jean Grey, in Ultimate Wolverine #4.

Written by Chris Condon, with art by Alessandro Cappuccio, Ultimate Wolverine #4 is chiefly focused on Logan’s inner turmoil. The issue is largely metaphorical, with the art showing a wolf and a bear in battle. This symbolizes the conflict between the true Logan and what the Maker’s Council would make of him. This combat is intercut with the dialogue of Logan’s handlers, fearful their brainwashed “Winter Soldier” is breaking his programming.

The comic concludes with a Directorate X report that makes mention of several “Omega level mutants” discovered by the Maker’s Council. One of them, Charles Xavier, was said to be dead, with his brain held by the Kremlin. Mention is also made of a “Magneto specimen,” though his fate is not detailed.

However, it seems likely he is dead as well, given the report’s speculation that together “they could have controlled the world.”

Jean Grey is used to control Ultimate Wolverine

The final page of the comic reveals a familiar red-haired woman. Identified as “the Phoenix specimen,” she is confirmed as the key to controlling the Ultimate Wolverine and several other assets. She is later confirmed to be the new Ultimate Universe’s version of Jean Grey by the same written report that mentions Charles Xavier.

Jean Grey, in turn, is being pacified with a combination of sedatives and the brain of Charles Xavier. It is unclear if her contact with Ultimate Wolverine might lead to her own emancipation. If so, this could lead to a completely different relationship between the two heroes in the new Ultimate Universe.

Ultimate Wolverine #4 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
