George R.R. Martin Prohibited 1 Major Idea on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms may follow the beloved duo Dunk and Egg, but it seems the creators intentionally avoided naming the series after them. Showrunner Ira Parker recently explained the thinking behind the decision, revealing how George R. R. Martin influenced the final title and what tone the team wanted audiences to expect from the new Westeros story.

It appears that the naming choice of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was deliberate from early development. According to Parker, Martin was firm about steering away from the more casual-sounding title tied to the novellas, Tales of Dunk and Egg. In a conversation with Variety, he recalled Martin saying, “Just don’t call it Dunk & Egg — it sounds like Laverne & Shirley. It sounds like a sitcom.” That pushed the team toward a more traditional fantasy title that better matched the world of Westeros.

However, Parker admitted he briefly reconsidered late in post-production, noting that fans would likely use the shorthand anyway. Still, he ultimately agreed with his team that keeping the formal title was smarter. He explained it was “nice to see a show called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and come there to find out that it is just a little lighter and has some fun, rather than setting people up with ‘Dunk & Egg’ and you sort of know what you’re gonna get.” The goal was to surprise viewers rather than telegraph the tone upfront.

Beyond the title talk, Parker confirmed Season 2 will largely follow Martin’s second Dunk and Egg novella while continuing the grounded storytelling approach. The series intentionally stays in Dunk’s point of view, avoiding deep dives into royal politics even when major Targaryen figures are involved. Still, Parker teased that some familiar faces could “probably” cross paths with Dunk again.

The finale also set up the duo’s next journey toward Dorne, though Parker kept details close to the chest. He emphasized the show’s mission is to deliver contained, adventure-driven stories rather than sprawling cliffhangers, describing it as an action-adventure tale about a knight and his young squire getting into trouble across Westeros.
