Marvel’s Avengers Team Talks About the Power of Ms. Marvel

Last week, Square Enix revealed that Marvel’s Avengers will feature Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, as a playable character. In a new interview with PlayStation Blog, Crystal Dynamics discussed what makes her a dynamic addition to the team.

“Telling our story of Kamala’s coming-of-age brings a fresh, hopeful perspective to the gameplay experience and her unique abilities as Ms. Marvel make her a character every person will want to play,” explained creative director Shaun Escayg. “Kamala Khan is the defining ingredient that makes our game stand apart from any Avengers story you’ve experienced before.”

The trailer hints that Kamala gained her powers when she was exposed to Terrigen Mists during the events of A-Day. Five years later, Kamala finds evidence that AIM set up the Avengers. Therefore, she does whatever it takes to reform the team and stop AIM.

“Kamala’s a tremendous inspiration to me,” said Sandra Saad, who provided Kamala’s voice and likeness. “She’s so relatable, and I think we can all find aspects of ourselves in her. So, at the end of the day, playing her ended up feeling like I was playing a super version of myself. I ultimately focused on paying homage to who Kamala is but bringing my own dash of originality and uniqueness to the role whenever appropriate.”

Additionally, the official Marvel’s Avengers Twitter account provided new details about Ms. Marvel. First off, here’s a look at Kamala’s “casual” outfit in the game, before she gets her iconic costume.

“Kamala’s look was a challenge for the art team,” added game director Tore Blystad. “At the time Crystal Dynamics started designing Kamala, she had only been around for a few years, so there wasn’t as much material to work from when compared to characters like Captain America or Thor.”

Blystad noted that “Kamala starts her journey in casual clothing – a look heavily inspired by the iconic front cover of the first Ms. Marvel comic. A satchel with scarf was added for some nice secondary movement when she’s jumping around – which happens quite often!”
