Beloved LOTR Game Remaster Arrives on Consoles Today

Aspyr has revealed The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition, a remaster of the 2011 action RPG, for PC & current-gen consoles. The announcement came as a surprise to fans, who could only access the original game on PC after it was delisted from official storefronts. The original game was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 as well, but was not playable on the following consoles from Sony and Microsoft.

The remaster includes several improvements over the original, which was developed by Snowblind Studios. The game originally released to middling reviews, but was beloved by fans. Watch The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition launch trailer below.

What’s included in The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition?

LOTR: War in the North Legacy Edition adds many modern-day features and quality-of-life improvements to the game. This includes the ability to hot-swap characters in co-op, improved enemy targeting, addition of Health, Mana, and XP bars for party members, and improved visual fidelity. Players can team up together in 3-player online co-op or 2-player local split-screen co-op. The remaster also adds a new autosave system, gyro controls, and targets 60fps on all platforms except the Nintendo Switch 1.

Aspyr also teased more remasters from the Lord of the Rings franchise accompanying the Legacy Edition’s announcement. There have been several LOTR video games released over the years, with most of them published by Electronic Arts or Warner Bros. Games.

War in the North Legacy Edition is priced at $19.99 on all platforms, with an additional 10% launch discount valid till August 24, 2026.

The game is available now on PC, PS5, XBOX Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. It will be arriving on the Nintendo EU eShop on August 18, 2026.
