Sony and Santa Monica Studio dropped major updates for the God of War series during the latest State of Play. With a surprise release and a long-requested revival confirmed, the franchise takes bold steps into the past and future.
Remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy is in development
A remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy is officially in development. Santa Monica Studio announced, “We’re thrilled to confirm that the original God of War trilogy is being remade – and what better way to announce it than with the legendary TC Carson who brought Kratos to life in the Greek saga!”
Carson announced the news during PlayStation’s State of Play event on February 12, 2026.
The remake celebrates the franchise’s 20th anniversary, which began with God of War on PS2 in March 2005. Santa Monica Studio stated, “This project is still very early in development, so we ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared.” Sony has not announced a specific release window yet.
PlayStation 5 surprise-launched a new game, God of War: Sons of Sparta. Mega Cat Studios developed it with Santa Monica Studio’s writing team. The 2D action platformer follows Kratos’ youth at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. It tells a canon story of “duty, honor, and brotherhood.”
TC Carson returns to voice the adult Kratos, serving as the game’s narrator. Santa Monica Studio confirmed, “Kratos will learn deadly skills using his spear and shield, as well as harness powerful divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus.” The game features hand-drawn pixel animation. It includes both returning creatures and new ones inspired by lesser-known aspects of Greek mythology.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is now available on PS5. The Standard Edition costs $29.99 USD / €29.99 / £24.99 / ¥3480, and the Digital Deluxe Edition costs $39.99 USD / €39.99 / £32.99 / ¥4480.
