Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has spoken out against Marvel Studios following the cancellation of his Disney+ series and shelving of Mahershala Ali’s Blade. During a recent interview, the Emmy-winning actor addressed the studio’s decision to pull the plug on his critically acclaimed show,
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Abdul-Mateen II was asked directly if he saw a systemic issue with which projects Marvel chooses to greenlight and support. In response, the actor noted, “I think the optics are obvious. If I’m a big business, if I’m Disney, if I’m Marvel, I don’t want to be attached to these optics.”
“So it should be a priority to change that narrative and to do what it takes to responsibly change that narrative with quality stories, with quality resources,” he continued.
Abdul-Mateen emphasized that Wonder Man possessed all the necessary components for long-term success, pointing to strong feedback from both viewers and critics. “Our show does deserve some study and some real, hard information about why a show like this did not continue forward, because it had all of the ingredients that one would want in a show,” he stated.
Are Wonder Man Season 2 and the MCU Blade movie ever happening?
Despite initial reports that Wonder Man had been greenlit for a second season, Marvel ultimately reversed the decision, releasing the writing team and shelving Season 2 development due to broader corporate strategy and viewership assessments. Co-creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest have since transitioned to other major projects.
As for the long-delayed MCU Blade reboot, lead actor Mahershala Ali recently confirmed he has officially moved on after years of production setbacks, creative overhauls, and director exits, effectively leaving the standalone feature dead at Marvel Studios.
While standalone solo projects for both heroes are no longer moving forward, Marvel has not ruled out bringing the characters into future crossover efforts. As a result, fans could still see Wonder Man or a newly envisioned Blade make appearance cameos in upcoming Avengers installments or wider MCU ensemble projects.
