Star Trek: Strange New Worlds may have teased a natural way to continue the show after its final outing. Season 4 recently aired its fourth episode, “A Case of Chiaroscuro,” putting one of the characters in the spotlight, leaving Paramount enough room to develop a spin-off.
The fourth episode of the ongoing Star Trek series takes on the film-noir adventure genre. Moreover, it puts Rebecca Romijn’s character, Una Chin-Riley, aka Number One, at the center of the story.
In the episode, Una is mistaken for a resistance leader and thrust into a conflict involving a Klingon occupation. With a commanding role, she immediately becomes a central figure of the franchise, allowing Paramount to continue her story as a spin-off without remaking The Original Series.
Moreover, the show concludes after Season 5, when James T. Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise, leading into the events of The Original Series. Additionally, with Kirk taking over, Spock would take Una’s role as second-in-command on the Enterprise.
This leaves ample room for the creators to develop Una Chin-Riley’s character within the franchise, with a storyline of her own adventures after she leaves the Enterprise.
Why Una’s story no longer fits in the Enterprise’s shadow
Although Una Chin-Riley had been part of The Original Series back in 1966, her appearance was extremely brief. The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series portrayed her as one of the show’s main characters.
Moreover, her discovery as a genetically modified Illyrian and the trial of that discovery in earlier seasons already established an important role for her in Starfleet, making her a profound symbol of systemic institutional prejudice. The new episode would be the second time Romijn’s character has been in the spotlight.
The latest episodes allowed the character to take a stand on her own, rather than delving into the Enterprise’s shadow. According to co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman, this episode serves as an “exploration of self” for the character. It recognizes Una as a commander capable of headlining an entire spin-off based on the era before the events of The Original Series.
This new ambition of Romijn’s character as a commander serves as a strong foundation for another installment in the franchise. If this spin-off were to take place, the series could bring back characters like La’an and Ortegas. Moreover, this spin-off could help Paramount avoid turning the final season of the show into an unofficial reboot of Kirk.
