DC Universe has many canceled projects at the moment. With most of the previously announced shows either stalled or scrapped, the future for DCU and James Gunn does not look bright.
Back in 2023, James Gunn unveiled a host of projects for the DCU fans to look forward to. Initially, three out of ten projects had a smooth ending. Creature Commandos, Superman, and Supergirl have already been released.
In fact, David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent received great reactions. However, apart from these projects, only Lanterns has a scheduled release date of August 16, 2026.
The remaining original titles have hit major roadblocks. The Brave and the Bold and Swamp Thing remain stalled in development, while Booster Gold is currently searching for a new creative team. Meanwhile, three major projects have been officially canceled.
Gunn confirmed earlier this year that The Authority feature film has been shelved, and a new report from The Ankler reveals that both Waller and Paradise Lost have also been stopped. Waller was intended to follow Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, while Paradise Lost was pitched as a Game of Thrones-style political drama set on Themyscira prior to Wonder Woman’s birth.
What comes next for James Gunn’s DCU after Lanterns?
One of the biggest DCU releases will be Lanterns. With the return of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, fans have high expectations for the HBO Max show. However, following the drop, DC fans can look forward to a couple more releases.
Directed by James Watkins, Clayface is set to release on October 23, 2026. With Tom Rhys Harries playing Matt Hagen, aka Clayface, the movie will also include the likes of Naomi Ackie, Eddie Marsan, Sam Hazeldine, and more. The synopsis of the movie reads, “Rising Hollywood star Matt Hagen descends into a horrifying, revenge-filled monster when scientific ambition strips him of his identity and humanity.”
One of the most hyped and awaited movies would be Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow. A sequel to his Superman, David Corenswet will reprise his role as the Man of Steel. Interestingly, this movie will have Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor joining forces with Superman to thwart a bigger threat. Man of Tomorrow is currently in production and is expected for a July 2027 release.
