A new rumor suggests Wonder Man Season 2 would’ve given Simon Williams a much bigger MCU role. The reported plans could have given Wonder Man actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II a major role in the franchise’s upcoming mutant storyline. With the second season no longer in the works, his next MCU appearance remains unclear.
Abdul-Mateen II made his MCU debut as Simon Williams in the Disney+ TV show, which follows an aspiring actor struggling to find his place in Hollywood, while secretly possessing superhero powers. According to Variety, the streamer has cancelled the second season despite receiving critical acclaim and a 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.
Wonder Man Season 2 isn’t happening, but Simon Williams could still return to the MCU
According to reports, Wonder Man characters can still appear in other future Marvel projects despite the cancellation. Industry insider Alex Perez recently responded to a fan question about Marvel’s plans for Simon. He said, “I really wouldn’t know how to answer that because it all really rode on Wonder Man season 2. He was going to be one of the prime examples the DODC would use to convince the general public about the threat “mutants” posed to society. Now I really wouldn’t know what the plan is with him.”
The American actor received an Emmy nomination for his performance as Simon Williams on the show. He became the only live-action actor to receive Emmy nominations for both a Marvel and DC project. The actor also responded to the cancellation in an Instagram post, writing, “Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back for Season 2. (And if you don’t knowww, now ya knoww!) That’s life, right? Everything will shake out.” He expressed his gratitude and added, “I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS.”
While Marvel Studios has yet to give an official statement about Simon Williams’ future after Wonder Man, his character could still have a place in the MCU’s larger plans. The franchise is expected to explore the mutants storyline in the upcoming projects, giving them several opportunities to bring back Abdul-Mateen II’s character. For now, fans will have to wait for an official confirmation to see whether the superhero returns and his rumored storyline ever makes it to the screen.
