Squid Game Season 4 Not Likely But Creator Shares Spin-off Idea

Despite the series’ stable popularity since Season 1, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that a Season 4 is unlikely. Instead, Hwang shared his idea for a potential Squid Game spin-off.

Squid Game has continued to garner massive viewership since the record-breaking first season debuted in 2021. That warranted the series a Season 2 renewal, which premiered on Netflix in December of last year. With the third season looming close on the horizon, the series creator revealed his idea for a spin-off, stressing that the next chapter in the survival thriller’s story won’t be a sequel.

What is the spin-off that could happen instead of Squid Game Season 4?

Hwang seems to be on board to expand the dystopian world he created. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the writer and director revealed he’s been thinking about the potential continuation of Squid Game. He shared that the possible spin-off will veer away from the arena and will instead focus on the three-year gap between Seasons 1 and 2.

“I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun looks around for the recruiters,” said Hwang. “There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park [Oh Dal-su] or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future.”

Hwang said that the upcoming third season would be the show’s finale, but he’s not closing any doors for the story’s continuation. He added, “Season 3 is indeed a finale, and you’ll be able to feel that once you watch. But I’m not trying to say that I’m going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never.”

Season 3 will see the return of Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, Lee Byung-hun as Hwang In-ho/the Front Man, Yim Si-wan as Lee Myung-gi, Kang Ha-neul as Kang Dae-ho, Wi Ha-jun as Hwang Jun-ho, and more. The synopsis for Season 3 reads as follows:

“The third and final season of Netflix’s most popular series finds Gi-hun, a.k.a. Player 456, at his lowest point yet. But the Squid Game stops for no one, so Gi-hun will be forced to make some important choices in the face of overwhelming despair as he and the surviving players are thrust into deadlier games that test everyone’s resolve. With each round, their choices lead to increasingly grave consequences.”

Squid Game 3 premieres on Friday, June 27.
