The fourth episode of Daredevil: Born Again, ‘Sic Semper Systema,’ raised the hopes of many comic readers. Some viewers thought they heard mention of Latveria, the fictional nation ruled by Doctor Doom. However, careful analysis of the episode reveals they were mistaken.

The Daredevil: Born Again episode actually made multiple references to the real-world nation of Latvia. In one scene, Matt Murdock negotiated with a court officer named Sofija Ozola. Matt wished her a happy Latvian Heritage Day, citing her name and the fact that he smelled a Latvian pastry on her breath. Later in the same episode, Mayor Wilson Fisk attended a Latvian Heritage Day celebration, and was serenaded by Latvian singers in traditional costume. Further, the closed captioning for the episode confirms everyone is saying Latvia rather than Latveria.

Latvia/Latveria confusion existed before Daredevil: Born Again
This is not the first time Latvia has been confused with Latveria in the MCU. The same thing happened in 2021 during The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. The story found the two heroes traveling to Riga, the capital of the Republic of Latvia. It was here they first met Karli Morgenthau, who told them of the Flag Smasher’s goals. As in Daredevil: Born Again, many misheard Latvia as Latveria.

While the two nations’ names sound similar, there are several important differences beyond one being fictional. Latvia is a Baltic republic located bordering Russia in Northeast Europe. Latveria, contrastingly, is located in Southeast Europe. While its exact location has varied over time, it is usually depicted as being located between Hungary and Transylvania. While there is a chance Daredevil: Born Again might reference Latveria in future episodes, it has not happened yet.
