What If…? Season 3: Vincent D’Onofrio Pitches a Kingpin-Focused Episode

Echo star Vincent D’Onofrio recently shared that he has an idea for a Kingpin centered episode of Marvel Studios’ What If…?

“I would love to do, like a, What If…? kind of Fisk story,” D’Onofrio told ComicBook.com. “I would just like to explore him in a, outside of the usual teaming up of villain and superhero. I’d like to see a truly more realistic version, kind of like what they did with the Joker . . . A more interior approach and you know, 10 times darker than anything we’ve done with him before. You know, exploring that would be really interesting.”

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker reimagined DC’s Clown Prince of Crime as Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comic struggling with his mental health who slowly inspires a countercultural revolution in Gotham City. The R-rated movie was a major success for Warner Bros., grossing over $1 billion at the box office.

So far, the darkest episode of What If…? has been the Season 1 installment “What If… Zombies?!,” although head writer A.C. Bradley previously revealed that she scrapped a “very, very dark” script she called “Children of Men with Spider-Man.”

Marvel releases first What If…? Season 3 images

What If…? Season 3 does not yet have a release date, however, that hasn’t stopped Marvel from beginning to market the next batch of episodes. The studio recently released four images from the upcoming season as a thank-you to fans for watching Season 2, which was released in December 2023.

The images, while light on story details, seem to be from two Season 3 episodes, with two featuring Sam Wilson/Captain America and Monica Rambeau wearing massive robotic suits of armor. The other two images look to be part of the Season 3 episode that Marvel previously teased, which will feature the Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Alexi Shostakov/Red Guardian, and Bill Foster/Goliath.

The first two seasons of What If…? are available to stream on Disney+.
