The Sandman Resumes Production on Season 2 With BTS Endless Picture

Netflix‘s dark fantasy series The Sandman is resuming production on its second today — the 35th anniversary of the date that DC published the first issue of the source comics by Neil Gaiman.

To mark the occasion, the Netflix X (formerly Twitter) account shared a behind the scenes photo of Tom Sturridge and Mason Alexander Park on set, respectively playing Dream and Desire of the Endless. On its news site, Tudum, Netflix also published a retrospective letter from Gaiman.

In his statement, Gaiman reminisced about the humble beginnings of his iconic comic, then offered a tease for what may be coming in Season 2 of The Sandman. “A journey is beginning that will take us from Destiny’s garden to Hell, from the Heart of the Dreaming to Ancient Greece and revolutionary France, and from there to places even I cannot quite imagine on the screen.” Rather than reminding fans that the wait for the new episodes might be longer than they would like, Gaiman added, “I will be patient. Good things are coming.”

What’s coming in Season 2 of The Sandman?

The Sandman Season 1 came to Netflix in 2021. The story follows Sturridge’s Dream, also called Morpheus or simply the Sandman, who is an immortal entity ruling over the domain of dreams and imagination. After he is held captive for decades by humans who were seeking his sister Death, Dream escapes and begins to rebuild his kingdom, approaching his duties with a somewhat changed perspective.

Along with creating an original mythology and crossovers with the DC universe, The Sandman comics drew on historical events and worldwide legends of all kinds. The second season promises to follow the source material with a “wild mix of genres” and subplots that include the Greek gods, while also teasing the return of Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer, Lord of Hell.

A release window for Season 2 has not yet been announced, but a series adapting The Sandman spin-off comics Dead Boy Detectives is also in the works at Netflix and will be set in the same world.
