Report: The Flash May End After An Abbreviated Ninth Season

Earlier today, word broke that Jesse L. Martin is leaving The Flash to potentially star in his own NBC series. Martin is also likely to appear in at least some of The Flash‘s season 9 episodes. However, Martin’s departure as a series regular may not be the only bad news for fans of the series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “sources say there has been talk of [The Flash] coming to a conclusion with an abbreviated final season.” Flash may end.

This is not entirely unexpected. Back in January, Grant Gustin signed a new deal to return for season 9 as Barry Allen/The Flash. But this contract limited Gustin’s involvement to only 15 episodes. Additionally, the report at the time indicated that Gustin turned down a multi-year deal in favor of a single additional season.

With Martin’s departure, Gustin, Candice Patton, and Danielle Panabaker are the only original cast members remaining. Neither Patton nor Panabaker have announced new deals for season 9. Regardless, they are expected to return.

At nine seasons, The Flash will become the Arrowverse’s longest-running series. But this comes at a time when the future of the Arrowverse is in question. The CW has yet to renew DC’s Legends of Tomorrow or Batwoman for new seasons. There’s also no word yet on whether Naomi will get a second season. For now, only Superman & Lois is set to get a third season. A decision about Stargirl season 4 may come during or after the third season this summer.

If The Flash TV series does come to an end in late 2022 or early 2023, it would also clear the way for The Flash movie to be the only live-action version of the character in an ongoing capacity. However, Ezra Miller’s recent legal problems are reportedly causing Warner Bros. Pictures to reconsider his future in the role. For now, The Flash film is still set to arrive in June 2023.
