Given the amount of thought that goes into creating Westworld, itâs reasonable to assume that the producers have the entire series already mapped out. Recent reports have even alleged that HBO is eyeing a six season for the show. But in a new interview with Variety, creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have laid those rumors to rest.
Nolan insisted that he and Joy have never set a predetermined goal line for ending Westworld. In fact, he went so far as to say that it would be âfoolishâ to do something like that.
âThings change, circumstances change,â said Nolan. âI think when we sat down to do the show, we didnât quite realize how difficult it would be to make this show â [laughing] how many years it would take per season. So weâve never actually talked about how many seasons that plan was, and indeed I think when we had the plan it didnât actually map out to a specific number of seasons, exactly. It was a beginning, a middle and an end.â

âIt would be like working on the novel and saying, this novel is going to be 436 pages,â added Joy.
Nolan went on to stress how fortunate he and Joy have received three seasons so far. He also conceded that the showâs conclusion is definitely on the horizon, but saying goodbye will be a difficult task.
âWeâre heading towards that end, but we havenât completely mapped it out,â added Nolan. âAt this point, part of the work is looking at the rest of the story we have to tell. Itâs two impulses, one against the other. You donât want to walk away from people who are as talented and cool as this. Theyâre all lovely, lovely people, and they love working together, we like working together. At the same time, you donât want to outstay your welcome. You have a story to tell, and you want to go out without feeling like youâve outstayed your welcome. So weâre trying to balance those things a bit.â
HBO recently renewed Westworld for a fourth season.
