‘Sounds Sad’: Classic Spider-Man Star Doesn’t Like MCU Tom Holland Movies for This Reason

Classic Spider-Man star isn’t a fan of Tom Holland’s MCU movies for one key reason. Kathy Garver, who was part of the Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends series that ran between 1981 and 1983, explained why she feels that way.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 80-year-old actress dropped some honest takes on the latest iteration of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She believes the MCU’s Peter Parker goes through too much hardship.

Garver said, “I haven’t seen the new one yet. Just got a Facebook message from a fan of mine who said, ‘I don’t know how much you follow the Marvel Universe,’ and capsulized the movie quickly and nicely into a paragraph. Now I feel like going out and seeing it. But it sounds sad to me that he has to go through all that stuff.”

Kathy Garver reflects on Fire-Star and her Spider-Man legacy

In the 1981 animated series, Garver voiced Fire-Star, a superhero who fought alongside Spider-Man. Looking back at her stint, she wanted to appear as Fire-Star in a live-action movie. She also reflected on her legacy and criticized what she sees as a lack of emotion in the newer web-slinger movies

The 80-year-old actress chimed in, “[I] saw one of the first [recent Spider-Man movies] that came out, but this fan was saying, ‘Fire-Star in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends added an element of emotional support.”

Garver also described the new movies as “desolate” and “all alone.” Furthermore, the veteran actress claimed that without the emotional quotient, the newer movies take away some of the warmth from the character and from its creator (Stan Lee), who was very much an emotional and energetic individual.

The latest release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, explores Peter Parker’s journey through loneliness. However, the movie has also been praised for its emotional elements and has broken quite a few box office records till now.
