Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey is heading towards an important weekend at the box office. While it is already set to release in mainland China on August 14, 2026, a surprising factor could give the movie a major box-office boost.
Nolan’s epic action fantasy film will be released across China, screening on more than 20,000 screens. The movie will be screened at almost 800 IMAX screens in China. Furthermore, it will reportedly hit theaters across 90% of China’s territory.
Two days before the release, The Odyssey had already collected $5.9 million from advance bookings, according to Variety. Adding to this, if preview screenings are included, total earnings have already reached $13.5 million, according to Maoyan, China’s largest online ticketing platform.
Furthermore, a prediction suggests an opening-day collection of $10.4 million for The Odyssey, per Maoyan Pro. While Spider-Man: Brand New Day is already having a strong theatrical run across mainland China, the IMAX allocation for The Odyssey will remain unchanged.
The Odyssey enters a crucial stretch of its theatrical release
The total worldwide box office gross for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey currently stands at $1,156,329,794, according to The Numbers. Meanwhile, The Odyssey currently stands in second place, right behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as the highest-grossing movie for 2026, per The Numbers.
Now, with The Odyssey set to release across mainland China on August 14, it might narrow the gap in worldwide collections with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has earned a total of $1,812,566,077.
The Odyssey secured 26.2% of its total earnings in its opening weekend alone. It might hold on to its position as the second-highest-grossing movie until Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 hit the theaters. Nolan’s directorial can still finish as the second-highest-grossing movie of 2026, as Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 will have only a short period left in 2026 to add to their box-office totals, as both movies will be released on December 18, 2026.
