A viral quote from one of Spider-Man 4‘s writers has sparked a huge debate among fans. They are now trying to figure out whether Jean Grey is a murderer.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day had Sadie Sink portray the role of Jean Grey. While she was shown as a formidable villain in the beginning of the movie, by the time the story concluded, Grey got her redemption. In a recent interview, Erik Sommers was asked to speak on how Jean might have caused emotional and bodily harm to the people whose bodies she took over momentarily.
Replying to the same, Sommers stated, per The Hollywood Reporter, “I think technically, she’s not responsible for any deaths. But you come away with the impression, certainly, that she’s caused a lot of destruction in mayhem. Even if you’re going to have a villain who really is redeemed at the end or goes through a transformation, you have to start them off in a place where they feel formidable.”
This particular quote immediately resulted in fans being divided about the justification. @GraceRandolph stated, “Jean Grey in Spider-Man Brand New Day 1000% killed that one dude hit by a car, and likely more.” @TheyLive420 said, “I feel like the issue is more on what the writers chose to do and the lack of consequences for it. They made a deliberate choice to have Jean Grey kill people and then didn’t address it. They could have made a different choice and it would have made the movie better for it.”
@TheRightSideofC pointed out, “What pissed me off is there was absolutely ZERO reason for her to make that dude walk backwards into the incoming car. Like, why make her do that?” @straightsoul07 differed slightly while writing, “This is jean before she met prof x.. so it totally makes sense for her to be filled with rage and revenge.. prof x will change her perspective.. loki, scarlet witch, black widow and many other characters had dark past and killed before.. it’s called character growth which happens.”
What comes next for Jean Grey in the MCU after Spider-Man 4?
Sadie Sink received some positive reviews following her portrayal of the omega-level mutant. Now, the character of Grey is expected to be a major addition to Marvel’s plans for an X-Men reboot movie. With Kit Conors and Samara Weaving already confirmed as Cyclops and Emma Frost, the X-Men standalone movie in the MCU might be a reality soon.
However, before the X-Men movie, Sink’s Jean Grey is expected to make an appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars. She might also reprise her role in Avengers: Doomsday, which is slated for a December 18, 2026 release. Although there is no confirmation, the power that Grey possesses means she can be of great help to the Avengers as they battle a multiversal war against the big bad, Doctor Doom.
