Spider-Man: Brand New Day introduced a fully armored Scorpion, but one mystery lingered after the credits rolled. Now, Michael Mando has finally shed light on the thinking behind Mac Gargan’s upgraded suit, though Marvel is still keeping several cards close to its chest.

Fans have been wondering who supplied Mac Gargan with such advanced equipment after his imprisonment in Spider-Man: Homecoming, especially with Adrian Toomes no longer running black-market operations.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Mando revealed that he and director Destin Daniel Cretton spent considerable time building the character’s unseen history. However, he stopped short of confirming whether Stark technology, alien tech, or another supplier ultimately armed Scorpion, explaining that Marvel has “not… pulled the trigger one way or another” on those details.
Without giving away any major plot details, Mando dropped an intriguing hint about how he sees Mac Gargan. In his view, Gargan was once a “very prominent detective” before losing faith in the system, particularly after seeing how government agencies and the Department of Damage Control dealt with powerful alien technology.
Mando also revealed that the creative team came up with what he described as a “nice backstory” for the character, adding that it has the potential to grow into a compelling origin story if Marvel chooses to revisit Gargan in a future film or series.
The actor also believes audiences have only scratched the surface of Scorpion’s journey. Mando described Brand New Day as “level one of the character’s potential,” adding that Gargan still has “two or three levels up,” including the possibility of eventually becoming Venom, just as the character does in Marvel Comics.
Even so, he emphasized that the future rests with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal, saying he trusts them to decide where Gargan goes next. For the unversed, Michael Mando first appeared in the MCU as Mac Gargan in Spider-Man: Homecoming back in 2017, but fans had to wait nearly ten years to see the character return.
Outside Marvel, the Better Call Saul standout has been keeping busy with a packed lineup, including Netflix’s Gundam, the comedy 72 Hours alongside Kevin Hart, and lending his voice to Bane in the upcoming animated Batman: Knightfall trilogy.
