Tom Holland has revealed that Spider-Man’s heartbreaking scene almost played out differently. The Hollywood star recalled that an emotional Avengers: Infinity War moment evolved through improvisation and acting exercises on set.
After Thanos snapped his fingers and wiped out half of all life in the universe, Spider-Man’s emotional last words to Tony Stark before vanishing remained with fans. While promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 30-year-old recalled how the famous Infinity War moment came into existence.
Speaking about the iconic moment, Holland revealed, “It definitely wasn’t written as long as it was on the page, and maybe it was just my insatiable need to milk that moment. I think the ‘I don’t want to go’ was maybe something that I improvised. Or if it wasn’t that it was improvised, it was that I kept saying it over and over again. Truth be told, that is an acting exercise that I have done since I was a kid to find real emotion. It’s to repeat a phrase, whether it’s ‘I’m so sorry,’ or ‘I don’t want to go,’ or ‘I love you,’ or something like that.”
Holland also credited directors Joe and Anthony Russo for giving the cast room to experiment and find the right emotion. The London-born star added, “It’s just a really, really effective way of bringing up emotions. So, I think that scene is an amalgamation of some acting exercises, Downey improvising, myself improvising, and also just the brothers giving us the perfect floor to dance on.”

In the same interview, Holland confessed that Sony and Marvel Studios have already planned Spider-Man’s future. The team knows how Peter Parker’s story will end and how he will eventually pass the mantle to the next hero. He shared, “I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.”
Recently, the actor said he hopes to return for Avengers: Secret Wars, though he has also stated that Marvel has not told him the film’s story. However, he knows how Peter Parker fits into the MCU after Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has received a largely positive response in early reviews. The fourth film will release in theaters on July 31.
