Dominic McLaughlin, the young actor cast as Harry Potter in HBO’s upcoming series, has shared his stunned reaction to receiving a personal letter of encouragement from the original film star, Daniel Radcliffe.
Dominic McLaughlin shares ‘mad’ reaction to Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry Potter letter
Dominic McLaughlin recalled on BBC’s Saturday Mash-Up! Live, the unforgettable moment he got the letter. He was on a train home to Glasgow when his father handed it to him. Reading the note and discovering the signature at the bottom left him reeling.
“It was insane,” McLaughlin beamed. “My Dad tapped me on the train and just gave me this letter. I read it, and then I got to the bottom, and it said, ‘Dan R.’ I was going mad, but I had to [keep cool]. I was on the train.”
Daniel Radcliffe had revealed last month that he had penned the note to the new Harry Potter star, wanting to offer his support. The gesture clearly left a major impression on McLaughlin, who was selected from a staggering number of auditionees for the iconic role.
When asked about the new Harry Potter production, Dominic McLaughlin reported that filming is progressing. “It’s going amazing, it’s going really well,” he said, adding, “I’ve made good friends with everyone, it’s great to be there.” The upcoming series also stars Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Radcliffe’s sentiment, expressed in a previous Good Morning America interview, was one of sweet solidarity. “I just see these pictures of him and all the other kids, and I just want to hug them,” Radcliffe said. “They just seem so young. I just look at them and say, ‘Oh, it’s crazy I was doing that at that age.’ But it’s also incredibly sweet, and I hope they’re having a great time.”
This passing of the torch has extended beyond Harry’s character. Rupert Grint also confirmed he wrote a similar letter to Alastair Stout. As filming continues, the new trio carries the support of the original stars with them, building anticipation for the Harry Potter series’ planned 2027 debut on HBO and Max.
