A recent conversation shed new light on Daniel Radcliffe’s connection to HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. The original film star revealed that he personally reached out to Dominic McLaughlin and described the thoughtful message he received in return.

Daniel Radcliffe just wants to hug the new Harry Potter cast

Daniel Radcliffe spoke about HBO’s new Harry Potter cast during an interview on Good Morning America.

He said he wrote a letter to Dominic McLaughlin, the young actor taking over the lead role in the television reboot. Radcliffe stated, “I wouldn’t say that anyone who is going to play Harry has to do that[reach out to me], but I know a few people working on the production. I wrote to Dominic and sent him a letter, and he sent me a very sweet note back.”

He added that he did not “want to be a specter in the life of these children” and explained that his message to McLaughlin was, “‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did — I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time.’”

Radcliffe said, “I just see these pictures of him and the other kids and I just want to hug them. They just seem so young. I do look at them and say, ‘Oh it’s crazy that I was doing that at that age.’ But it’s also incredibly sweet, and I hope they’re having a great time.”

Additional cast members include Paapa Essiedu as Snape and John Lithgow as Dumbledore. Janet McTeer joins as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost has been cast as Hagrid.

The young ensemble also features Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley.

Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden built a temporary school for the child actors to continue their studies during production (via BBC).

HBO reportedly plans to debut the series in 2027.
