A quiet but promising update has surfaced regarding the future of X-Men ’97 as Marvel Studios continues to shape its animated slate. Although the studio has not made any official announcements, recent comments hint that plans for additional seasons may already be in discussion, suggesting the story could extend well beyond its current run.
X-Men ’97 Season 4 and 5 become highly likely
Speaking to Collider at New York Comic Con, Marvel Studios Head of TV, Animation, and Streaming Brad Winderbaum said, “There is definitely, more than possibly, more to come from X-Men ’97. We’re talking about Seasons 4 and 5 now.” His statement gives the clearest indication so far that the series will continue beyond Season 3.
The hit animated revival serves as a direct continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1996). Winderbaum added that work on Season 3 is already well underway, noting, “Season 3 is, I’ve almost seen animatics for the entire season, and it is incredible. I saw an episode the other day.” Marvel has already renewed X-Men ’97 through Season 3 and confirmed that Season 2 will premiere in summer 2026.
The studio fired original showrunner Beau DeMayo shortly before X-Men ’97 Season 1 debuted, creating a major production shift. Writer Matthew Chauncey, known for Ms. Marvel and What If…?, stepped in as the new showrunner. Voice actor Lenore Zann (Rogue) told Collider earlier that the team had completed most of Season 2 before the transition, which helped preserve the show’s tone and story direction.
Zann, Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), and AJ LoCasio (Gambit) have expressed interest in creating an animated X-Men movie. Although Marvel has not confirmed an animated project, the studio is developing a live-action X-Men film directed by Jake Schreier.
X-Men ’97 premiered on Disney+ in March 2024, with Jake Castorena directing. The series continues to expand Marvel’s animated universe and remains one of the studio’s most successful streaming titles to date.
