The seventh episode is one of the most explosive entries in Season 2 of X-Men ’97. Two of the most powerful mutant antagonists die in the episode, leaving us to question what will happen next in the fan-favorite series.
X-Men ’97 Season 2 kills off Exodus, but what happened to Apocalypse?
X-Men ’97 Season 2 Episode 7 shows the deaths of Exodus and the remains of Apocalypse. While the demise of the former is likely permanent, the same is probably not true for Apocalypse, who has cheated death countless times in Marvel Comics.
The episode predominantly focuses on siblings Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler and Rogue, as they join other members of the X-Men in a mission to rescue Graydon Creed, an anti-mutant politician and the human son of Sabretooth and Mystique. The Acolytes of Magneto, a radical group led by Exodus, abduct Creed and demand the release of mutants captured by X-Factor. Colossus is part of this group. It is revealed that he joined them after the death of his sister Illyana.
The X-Men travel to the Savage Land, where the Acolytes’ base is, and inevitably encounter the group. Kurt convinces Colossus to take him to see Creed, who does little to hide his contempt for the mutants. Kurt convinces Exodus to hold a trial for Creed, with Colossus serving as the judge. During the trial, Exodus attacks Colossus and is later killed by Creed.
Toward the end of the episode, Cable and his team find their way to the secret lair of Apocalypse under the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. When they discover the remains of the powerful mutant, their shock is apparent. The team also finds a partially burned Queen of Hearts playing card, indicating that the Dark Gambit, whom Apocalypse resurrected in the last episode, might be responsible for his death.
However, it’s unlikely that Apocalypse will remain dead. In the comics, Apocalypse first returned from the dead as far back as 1991, in an issue of X-Factor.
